Summertime has begun violently in Chicago, with nine people being killed in Memorial Day weekend shootings across the third most populous city in the United States.
At least 32 other people have been injured in the shooting incidents, including a 4-year-old girl, who was shot in the head while sitting inside a car in the West Englewood neighborhood on Friday evening, according to NBC Chicago.
A 17-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl were also injured in the same incident, and were taken to nearby hospitals.
In the first fatal shooting of the weekend, a 34-year-old man was shot to death while sitting on the front porch of a home in the Wicker Park neighborhood at about 1:45 am on Saturday, police said.
He received gunshot wounds to the chest and shoulder and was pronounced dead in John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital.
Shortly after, a man was found with multiple gunshot wounds in the 1000 block of West 14th Place on the Near West Side, police said. The 20-year-old was taken to the same hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Another man, 24, was found unresponsive with a gunshot wound to his head in the Austin neighborhood on Saturday afternoon. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
About 11 hours later, another young man was found dead with a gunshot wound to his face in an alley in the Albany Park neighborhood, according to police.
Early Sunday morning, a suspect opened fire at two men in the South Shore neighborhood. One of the men, who was 32-years-old, received gunshot wounds to the neck and was pronounced dead in Jackson Park Hospital. The other man, whose age was not known, was in stable condition.
In another shooting early on Sunday, a 29-year-old woman was shot by a group of people, who had been denied entry to a house party in West Englewood. She was later pronounced dead in hospital.
Two men, ages 25 and 39, were also shot in the same incident, with the older one later succumbing to his chest and leg injuries at Holy Cross Hospital.
Three others, including a 15-year-old boy, were killed in shootings late Sunday afternoon and evening.
A man, age 35, was shot in the stomach in a drive-by shooting at about 3:20 pm in the East Garfield Park neighborhood.
A short time later, a 28-year-old man was shot and killed in the Humboldt Park neighborhood.
At around 8:15 pm, a teenage boy was shot to death and another wounded in the 4400 block of South Cottage Grove. The boys were standing outside when someone shot at them from a sedan.
Every year, more than 30,000 people are shot and killed in the United States.
The US averages 87 gun deaths each day as a function of gun violence, with an average of 183 injured, according to the University of Chicago Crime Lab and the Centers for Disease Control.
